PT Astra Daihatsu Motor launches the new Daihatsu Xenia, which called Daihatsu Xenia VVT-i on Wednesday, July 12 2006, in Shangri-La Hotel-Jakarta. This model, which is the improvement of the previous Xenia model, not only just has more elegant exterior and more luxury interior, but also is equipped with VVT-i engine, which makes this model more powerful and responsive.

Since its debut in January 2004, Daihatsu Xenia has obtained a very good response and acceptance from Indonesia automotive market. It shows high level of customer demand. Total Xenia sales reached 22,006 units in 2004 and 27,505 units in 2005.

" This Xenia VVT-i is our answer to fulfill customer needs of an extra efficient car but still trendy, luxury, comfort, safe, and affordable. It also shows Daihatsu's readiness for the Euro2 implementation next year," said Johannes Loman, Marketing Director of PT Astra Daihatsu Motor.

PT. Astra Daihatsu Motor, which located in Sunter – North Jakarta, as one of Toyota Group's overseas production bases, produces both Daihatsu Xenia and Toyota Avanza, the collaboration products between Daihatsu and Toyota. Daihatsu Xenia VVT-i, not only with its new exterior and interior looks, but also is equipped with the VVT-i system. The VVT-i system will improve Xenia's engine performance to more powerful through higher maximum power, more responsive through higher maximum torque, and also make it more efficient fuel consumption. There are 2 kinds of engines, EJ-VE 1.0 VVT-i and K3-VE 1.3 VVT-i engines. The EJ-VE 1.0 VVT-i engine is the only engine in Indonesia, with displacement 1,000cc and has VVT-i system. For the 1.0 L engine model (Mi and Li variants), the benefits from the VVT-i system have been used to improve the fuel efficiency by approximately 7% for those customers who value economical benefits of Xenia. Cereal manufacturers know how to grab your attention: bright colours, simple and compelling messages (“Source of 5 essential nutrients!!!”), catchy headlines. What about the ingredient list with all the nutritional information? That’s on the side; easily found, but obviously secondary.

The lesson: Ingredient lists don’t sell cereal. Look at your business features as you would the nutritional information on a cereal box: people only look at it when they are already considering buying the box. It displays important information that needs to be communicated, but it does not answer the first questions in the client’s mind.

For service providers, marketing is a challenge: you know your service is useful and has value, but because you don’t have a physical product, the benefits may be harder to define. After all, your client will only experience what you do once they actually hire you, which they won’t do if the benefits of using your services are not convincing.

How will you, as a service professional, deal with this fact? You must communicate with your clients by being focused on their needs first.

Attract, then Inform
I notice that many of my clients put too much emphasis on what they do instead of emphasizing why their audience should choose them over the competition — or choose them at all.

What’s wrong with these claims? Absolutely nothing, if they are true. In fact, these are features your clients should be aware of. They are part of what you are offering (the “what” of your business), but they are independent of your clients and their personal concerns.

Benefits are effective in attracting people because they speak to what they can gain personally. Once you have their attention, then you can enhance your selling proposition with features. Features can close a sale, but they will usually not be your client’s first point of entry.

Your benefits should:

* Show the value of your services,
* Tell your audience what problems you will solve, and
* Describe what they stand to gain by doing business with you


I vs. You
In the features list above, notice how many times “I”, “we”, “our”, “my”, and “me” are used. People are naturally concerned with their own needs first. By presenting them with a list of reasons why you are so great, you are sending them the wrong message: that their needs are secondary to what you think they should know. Don’t make the mistake of turning your marketing into a giant résumé of your accomplishments. Use words like “you” and “your” more often.

Be your own client
What do your clients look for? Try a little role playing: Pretend you are your own prospective client and objectively evaluate your communication material.

Ask yourself: Would I buy from myself? What would keep me interested? What am I looking for? What do I really want?

Learn from how you search the web: If you were looking for administrative help, would you be searching Google for “15 years of experience”? Probably not. You would be more likely to search for terms like “database entry” or “transcription services”. If that’s what you look for, chances are most of your clients will do the same. Give them what they want and organize your information accordingly.

As you create any communication material, answer these questions:

* What is the value of my service?
* What distinct problem will my service solve?
* What will my client gain?
* What does my client stand to lose by not using my service?
* How will my client feel after buying/using my service?
* What pain will it take away?
* What goal will my client achieve?
* What desire does it fulfill?


The answer may be different for each target market, so it is important to know who your prospective clients are before asking yourself these questions.

Being completely objective about your own business is not easy; you’ve worked hard to build it and you know it inside out. Defining your benefits from an outside perspective can enable you to better understand how other people view your business. Getting a view of your own “big picture” is something a professional business coach can help you achieve.

Whether you do it alone or get outside help, it never hurts to think about what you have to offer to potential clients. So, next time you’re at the grocery store, stop by the cereal aisle and ask yourself: “What are MY 5 essential nutrients?

Running a business is easy compared to the act of selling. As a small business owner you started your business to deliver a superior product or service, not to become a salesperson. None-the-less you must master basic sales skills or risk losing your business due to lack of clients!

Here are 1o tips to help you turn those inquiries into sales.

1. Define the benefits to the customer. You’ve found their pain, now you need to come up with a cure by answering their question, “What’s in it For ME?” For instance, if you are pet-care provider you “make it possible for a couple to enjoy their honeymoon in Hawaii without feeling guilty about leaving their pet. ”

2. Qualify before you present. Okay, you know their pain and can cure it. You now need to know if the person on the other end of the phone or e-mail query is likely to buy from you. Take time up front to ensure this a good prospect for you. When you qualify your prospect you want to know:

a. Is this person the decision maker?
b. Does this person have a real need for what I’m selling?
c. Does this person have the budget necessary to pay for my product or service?
d. When does this person wish to start using my product or service?

3. Only sell to the decision maker. No matter how well your product or service solves a client’s problem, and no matter how wonderfully you articulate that benefit – if you are selling to someone who doesn’t have the authority to purchase your product or service, you’ve wasted your time.


4. It’s about the relationship! Every interaction you have with the potential client either builds or destroys their trust in you. As Henry Ward Beecher said, “Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself.” This a great mantra for anyone involved in the sales cycle. Trust takes a long time to build and it’s very easy to destroy. Make sure every part of your relationship with the prospect is held to
your highest standard.

5. Preparation, preparation, preparation. Do you know what you want the customer do at every step of the process? Set goals for each step of your sales process, as well as overall sales goals for the month, quarter and year. Create an outline and script to get you from an inquiry to a sale. Tweak your outlines and scripts to fit each individual customer. One size does not fit all.

6. Questions and objections are a natural part of the sales process. During your preparation compile a list of every possible question and objection that you might hear. Now spend some time creating a list of responses. Your responses should lead back to questions eliciting more information about your customer ’s pain.

7. The issue of price. If the first question they ask is “ how much does it cost?” Don’t beat around the bush, answer their question right away with a statement like, “depending on the service plan you select our rates range from XX to XXX, I would like to spend a couple of minutes finding out specifically which plan is right for you.” If they are comfortable with your price range, they will continue the conversation. Remember, part of qualifying is determining whether your potential customer has the budget to buy from you.

BONUS TIP: By answering their question head-on you are making it clear that you are a ‘straight shooter,’ a great way to build trust!

8. Make it easy to buy from you. Has this ever happened to you? You find a great product on a website or in a store, and you are ready, willing and able to buy, only to find out a) you can’t find the “purchase now” button on the site, b) they need to find out if they still have the item, or c) the clerk is busy on the phone? Depending on your mood and free time you may wait, but more than likely you leave without your purchase. Is it infinitely easy for your customers to buy your product the first time? Make it even easier for them to make a repeat purchase!

9. Ask for Feedback. No matter how good at sales you become, you must keep your ‘edge.’ Ask questions to find out what you’re doing well, what your customers wish you did and why potential customers did not buy from you. Use what you learn in your preparation and goal setting process.

10. Have Fun. Running your own business should be fun. You’ve dedicated your career to something you love. Let your personality shine and make sure you find ways to include your customers and associates in your good time!
